Many of these animals can be seen in the wildlife enclosure near Neuschönau. The Bavarian Forest National Park, founded in 1970, is the oldest and largest national park in Germany. This area together with the Upper Bavarian Forest Natural Park, the Czech Šumava National Park and the surrounding protected land, form the largest unbroken area of protected forest in Central Europe.
